Teaching Kids to Use Vinyl | Energy Express Visit

Hi everyone - Elisha here! Just wanted to fill you in on some of the fun stuff that we’ve been up to here at Happy Crafters headquarters. On July 27th I was invited to be a guest speaker at Energy Express at Mason Dixon Elementary school.

Energy Express is “an award-winning, 8-week, summer reading and nutrition program for children living in West Virginia’s rural and low-income communities.” For my visit I wanted to talk to the kids about something I know well – being creative! I read two books, “Sarabella’s Thinking Cap” and “A Kidd’s Guide to Graphic Design”.

Sarabella’s Thinking Cap is a story about a young girl who is super creative, but sometimes has trouble concentrating in school because she spends so much time daydreaming (a story that I can relate to quite a bit!). She then decides to make her own thinking cap to put all of those great thoughts and ideas of hers on the outside to share with the world!

After reading this book I helped my first group of students make their own thinking caps using paper chef hats that we purchased from Amazon and a bunch of pre-cut designs that I made using adhesive vinyl! They then put the finishing touches on their caps with their own drawings and doodles. This was such a fun activity that I’d recommend for any group of 4-8-year-olds!

For the older students I chose to go into more detail about my job as a graphic designer and what it’s like to go into a creative career. We read and excerpt out of “A Kidd’s Guide to Graphic Design” and talked about what exactly graphic design is and where you may find it (hint: it’s everywhere!). Then, using various HTV designs that I had cut and weeded, I let them practice their own design skills by combining colors, fonts, and images to create their own personalized pencil cases.

This activity was a huge hit and the kids seemed super excited to show off their new creations when school starts in a couple weeks. It was extremely rewarding to be able to use vinyl to teach a group of great students about creativity and design and I hope we are able to come back and do it all again next year.
